That Time I Surprised Addy
At the beginning of last year I decided it would be fun to spend Christmas in New York with my niece. I also thought it would be a good idea to surprise her.
A week or so (I actually can’t remember how long before) my mum and I told Addy over a video call that we’d be spending Christmas with her, her mum (my sister, Alicia) and her dad (Carlos).
The journey for Mum and I started in Sydney… with a photo for the blog, of course.
After an insane amount of hours flying, an encounter with an angry, egotistical TSA agent (or was that on the way home?) we made it to the newly renovated Terminal B in LaGuardia Airport.
Back tracking a little, Mum and I were lined up to walk past sniffer dogs. Except you couldn’t see what was actually happening because there were partitions. But I could hear a TSA agent regularly telling people to listen and repeating instructions aggressively.
I was determined to be the perfect passenger and get it right.
Ok, so now it’s my turn to get sniffed. Turns out the instructions provided by the TSA agent were unclear and people were not given enough time to process them.
Anyway, he yells at me, “Listen to the instructions!” (Or something to the effect.)
To which I responded with a firm look on my face, “I am.”
It was at that moment I realised I probably shouldn’t have a showdown with a TSA agent, so I went on my “merry” way. Actually I was very stressed, tired and cried a little.
Ok, now back to Terminal B. Carlos picked Mum and I up, supplied us with snacks and took us to the Hilton Garden Inn.
Mum and I stayed here for a couple of nights partly because we arrived so late at night.
It kind of felt like we’d stepped onto a Hallmark Christmas movie set.
The room was super comfortable with all the necessary amenities.
A couple of days later we turned up to the Bravos. Addy had coloured in this sign for us.
She also left us lovely presents of socks and artworks.
We went to pre-k to surprise Addy after school.
Then we did a little shopping.
I think Addy’s favourite show at the time was on - Mira: The Royal Detective.
Then we went on a bus tour. Despite being expected to help power the bus it was a very enjoyable tour. 10/10
We showed Addy a game Alicia and I played as children.
Addy showed us a game she loves, which we had all played a few times on video chat.
Next was Addy’s favourite restaurant - Senor Taco Mexican Grill & Bar. Or as Addy calls it Marissa’s (after her favourite waitstaff).
The food was tasty and the service friendly.
Back at the Bravos it was time for a show and a story.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable show that included unexpected audience participation.
Then it was time for bed before another big day.
